What is a Veterinary Assistant?
The role of a Veterinary Assistant is to assist the Veterinarian with medical procedures and patient examinations, perform laboratory procedures, care for hospitalized patients and help to maintain the overall functions of the clinic.
The Typical duties of a Veterinary Assistant are:
- Provide compassionate care for clients’ pets
- Restrain patients for the veterinarian or technician
- Collect blood, urine and fecal samples
- Monitor, record and report physical signs of hospitalized patients
- Clean cages, run boarding and clinic facilities

The Veterinary Assistant Diploma Program will provide instruction in lecture and laboratory hands-on formats. Students will learn about the terminology used in the veterinary field, as well as basic animal care (wash, feed); obtain and prepare animal records, charts, and histories; how to provide specialized nursing care; preparation of animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery; assist in surgical procedures; and applicable computer software to record all transactions necessary to the veterinary office (billing, notification of appointments, customer service skills, and scheduling protocol).
